Dauntless Manufacturing is proud to announce the launch of our newest blade, the Dermot Dagger. This striking new dagger pays homage to the legendary combatives instructor Dermot "Pat" O'Neill and is inspired by the iconic V-42 stiletto carried by the elite First Special Service Force (FSSF), known as the "Devil's Brigade," during World War II.
Formed in July 1942, the First Special Service Force was a unique joint American-Canadian commando unit designed to execute specialized operations behind enemy lines. The force was originally trained at Fort William Henry Harrison near Helena, Montana, where they developed expertise in mountain warfare, parachute jumping, hand-to-hand combat, and cold-weather survival skills.
The V-42 dagger, renowned for its distinctive slender blade, skull-crusher pommel, and leather-wrapped handle, was specifically designed by Lieutenant Colonel Robert T. Frederick and combat instructor Colonel Rex Applegate for close-quarters combat and stealth operations. The design was penned by Major Orval J. Baldwin, and prototypes were made by legendary knife maker John Ek. The V-42 was issued exclusively to FSSF members, it quickly became a symbol of stealth, strength, and courage.
During World War II, the FSSF distinguished itself through several critical operations. Among their most notable campaigns was their pivotal role in reclaiming the Aleutian Islands from Japanese occupation, specifically the recapture of Kiska Island in 1943. Later, they displayed remarkable bravery and combat effectiveness in the rugged mountains of Italy, particularly during the brutal fighting at Monte La Difensa, Monte Cassino, and the Anzio beachhead. Their effectiveness in nighttime operations and surprise assaults led to their fearsome nickname, the "Black Devils," attributed by their German adversaries.
The Dermot Dagger not only honors this storied past but also celebrates the distinguished career and contributions of its namesake, Dermot "Pat" O'Neill. O'Neill began his illustrious career with the Shanghai Municipal Police, an elite force known for their proficiency in combatives and close-quarter techniques. This formative experience laid the groundwork for O'Neill's lifelong dedication to martial arts and combative training. He later became a highly influential figure in military combatives, renowned for his deep understanding of martial arts, combative strategy, and realistic training methods. O'Neill dedicated his life to teaching military personnel essential hand-to-hand combat skills, emphasizing effectiveness, precision, and adaptability—significantly influencing modern combatives training and doctrine within military units worldwide.
At Dauntless Manufacturing, we've stayed true to the classic elements that made the V-42 iconic, while incorporating modern materials and manufacturing techniques to enhance durability, functionality, and performance. Like its historic predecessor, the Dermot Dagger features a balanced, slender profile ideal for precise and controlled movements.
By naming our newest blade after Dermot "Pat" O'Neill, we honor a legacy of valor, skill, and combat readiness, ensuring the spirit of those elite fighters endures. The Dermot Dagger isn't just a knife—it's a tribute to courage, precision, and the unconquerable spirit of warriors past and present.
