Blade Care - Non Stainless Steels

Rust Prevention Tips for Non-Stainless Steels Like CPM 3V, 80CrV2, and Similar Steels

Non-stainless knife steels, such as CPM 3V, 80CrV2, and other high-carbon or tool steels, offer excellent toughness and edge retention. However, these steels are more prone to rust and corrosion and need proper care to stay in top shape. Here’s a straightforward guide to help you prevent rust and keep your knife in optimal condition, with practical tips including the use of Axe Wax and VCI paper for enhanced protection.

Clean Your Blade Regularly
After each use, thoroughly clean your knife blade to remove any moisture, dirt, or other substances that can cause rust. This step is particularly important for non-stainless steels, especially if the knife has been exposed to moisture, food acids, or saltwater. Use gentle dish soap and water to wash the blade, then promptly dry it.

Dry Thoroughly
Drying your knife immediately after cleaning is crucial for rust prevention. Even a small amount of moisture can lead to rust spots on non-stainless steels. Use a soft, lint-free cloth to dry the blade completely before moving on to the next steps.

Apply a Protective Coating with Oil or Wax
Applying a thin layer of oil or wax forms a barrier against moisture and oxygen, which helps protect the steel from rusting. Here are some excellent options for non-stainless knives:

  • Mineral Oil: A food-safe oil that’s ideal for knives used in food prep, creating a moisture barrier on the blade.
  • Axe Wax: A natural, food-safe wax that offers long-lasting protection for high-carbon and tool steels. To apply, rub a small amount of wax onto the blade, spread it evenly, and wipe off any excess with a soft cloth.
  • Specialty Knife Oils: These oils are specifically designed to protect non-stainless steels and offer excellent corrosion resistance for blades stored long-term or exposed to the elements.

Apply a thin, even layer of your chosen oil or wax to cover the blade surface thoroughly.

Store with VCI (Volatile Corrosion Inhibitor) Paper
VCI paper is a practical solution for protecting non-stainless steel knives in storage. This specialized paper releases corrosion-inhibiting molecules that form a protective layer over the blade, shielding it from moisture and oxygen. Here’s how to use VCI paper effectively:

  • Wrap the blade in a sheet of VCI paper before placing it in storage.
  • If storing in a leather sheath, wrap the knife in VCI paper first, as leather can absorb and retain moisture.
  • Replace the VCI paper every 12 to 24 months to maintain its protective effect.

Store in a Dry, Cool Place
When storing non-stainless knives, choose a dry, cool environment away from high-humidity areas. Prolonged exposure to damp conditions increases the risk of rust. If storing your knife in a sheath, particularly a leather one, consider additional protection like VCI paper or oil to prevent moisture exposure.

Inspect Regularly
Even if stored with care, it’s wise to inspect your knife periodically for any signs of rust or discoloration. If you find any, gently remove it using a non-abrasive cloth or pad. Reapply oil or wax to the cleaned area and rewrap in VCI paper if needed.

With regular cleaning, drying, protective applications of oil or Axe Wax, and storage with VCI paper, you can enjoy the unique benefits of high-carbon and tool steels without worrying about rust. These easy care habits will keep your knife ready for use, no matter when you reach for it.
