How to Scorch Natural Canvas Micarta Scales: An Instructional Guide

The Harris Scales - Dauntless Manufacturing

Materials Needed:

  • Natural canvas Micarta scales
  • Blow torch or similar open flame
  • Protective gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Tool for removing scale fasteners
  • WD-40 or wax for finishing
  • Flame-resistant surface (metal or concrete)

Step 1: Remove the Scales

  • Use the appropriate tool to detach the natural canvas Micarta scales from your knife.

Step 2: Prepare the Workspace

  • Place the scales on a flame-resistant surface like metal or concrete.

Step 3: Apply Heat Slowly

  • Wear safety glasses and gloves. Use the tip of the blow torch flame to gradually scorch areas you want to highlight. Keep the flame moving to prevent over-burning. Note that the scales will look darker after applying wax or oil.

Step 4: Cool and Finish

  • Allow the scales to cool completely.
  • Apply WD-40 or wax to enhance and protect the finish.

Important Material Compatibility Notes

  • Only scorch natural canvas Micarta scales. Other materials like G10, ULTEM, and black canvas Micarta may melt, burn, or react poorly to heat.

Adjustments for Warped Scales

  • If the scales warp:
    • Soak them in hot water and apply pressure to reshape, or lightly scorch the back side.
    • Often, reinstalling the scales on the knife can correct minor warping.

Disclaimer

  • Warning: Only attempt this if you are experienced with using a blow torch. Scorching Micarta can be hazardous—don't burn your house down, yourself, your neighbors, or their property. Or really anything that should not be caught on fire. SERIOUSLY. Be cautious!
  • Scales that have been modified (such as by scorching) are non-returnable.
